Christmas music already??

To town band rehearsal last evening. We only have one gig left in the summer season, so we read through the music we'll be rehearsing for the next three and a half months: things with titles like "A Cold Christmas Eve," "A Snowy Christmas," everything but "Christmas in the Middle of a Sleet Storm." I emjoy the band, and I even enjoy the Christmas music, although the holiday itself is not my favorite one. But there is something magical about playing a Christmas concert in a New England church with the snow coming down outside (and we cancel if there actually is a sleet storm).
I bought dark green yarn to go with the lime green back of the baby sweater, and I'll knit or crochet edgings in the opposite color for front and back to make it look as though I'd planned it that way.
Now I need a challenging project. I've been going through my magazine stash and checked the KR forum for comments on the latest magazines. It would be nice to find something I could actually use my stash for, but maybe that's too much to ask.

baby sweater

I've been away doing a teacher training for the past week in another state. DH gave me both maps and written directions to get me there. No problem; I felt so proud at not getting lost -- until on my way back I didn't notice that I was going north instead of south. It was an hour and a half later that I realized I was in another part of the state. I actually did find my way back home, and DH just shook his head. My brother, on the other hand, is threatening to give me a GPS for Christmas. I think what I really need is a chauffeur. (Just think of the knitting I could get done.)
The baby sweater turned out to be a good project for my needs. While I channel surfed I got the back done. I think I need to plan a bit more carefully, though, because I've run out of yarn half way through, so today I'll pick up some yarn, matching if possible, a contrast if necessary, to finish the sweater. So the back is one color and the front is another. Grandson is going to care?
In any case, the sweater is a great quick and cute project, so after I finish this one I'll start a charity one to work on when I want something mindless.
My other project is a crocheted granny square shawl in very bright colors. Also mindless. I think I need a challenging project as well.

Going solo

I'm heading out on my first time training all by myself; so what I needed was something to read and something to knit. Since everything I'd been working on was gone, I pulled a cute and simple baby sweater off the net and have started that. All garter stitch, all in one piece, no pattern or anything to worry about except some increasing and decreasing to keep track of. It'll keep me busy for the four nights in a motel room. It'll keep me grounded, thinking of my absolutely beautiful, intelligent, and charming grandson.
I'm also obsessing about actually finding the place, since I'm geographically challenged. But I remind myself, almost everyone around speaks English, so when I get lost they'll help me get found again.
I'm nervous; but I'm excited. It's going to be fun.

First entry

As of this summer, I've
  • ended a job I had for 20 years and started a new one
  • frogged the complete back of a sweater and a non-competent shawl
  • given up on finding zucchini recipes
  • broken up with the hairdresser who's been doing an increasingly erratic job on my hair (for many years; you can't say I'm not persistent)
  • thrown out piles of papers

So it's a good time to try something else, like a blog. It's funny to think of how private this is, since no one is likely to read it -- but someone might. Hi, whoever you are.
